Archbishop Wilton Gregory appointed first African-American Cardinal

Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Wilton Gregory as Cardinal becoming the first African American to earn such a superior rank.

The Washington based Archbishop was among 13 others appointed by the Pope on Sunday.

Gregory is well know for his tough stand on sexual abuse among clerics that has seen the Church elevate in status over the years.

His appointment also marks the strides made on racial justice and how the view on historical racism and slavery has shifted in modern America.

Wilton Gregory recently addressed church leaders urging them to view black bishops just like other bishops in the world.
