Arsenal thrash Man. United to cement fourth place finish

Arsenal sealed a convincing 3-1 win against bitter rivals Manchester United on Saturday to keep the hopes for a top four finish alive.

The Gunners opened the scoring through Nuno Tavares who pounced on a Saka’s deflected ball before the England youngster doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the first half. This is after he was fouled in a controversial build up that saw Eddie Nketiah score from close range.

Efforts by the visitors paid off when Cristiano Ronaldo tapped in home a Matic assist as Manchester United missed a number of opportunities to turn the results around earlier in the first half.

Bruno Fernandes missed from the penalty spot when his effort struck the left corner of the goal. The penalty was a result of a visible handball from Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares.

In the second half, Xhaka’s long range shot in the 70th minute sealed the fate of the Red Devils as the ball went past De Gea who could do nothing to save it.

The results now take Arsenal to fourth position and three points ahead of Tottenham who face Brighton in the evening. A win for Tottenham will take the race to the wire before the two club face off on 12th May.

Manchester United remain in sixth position with 54 points with only five games left before the end of the season. The Red Devils announced the arrival of Erik Ten Hag as their new coach ahead of the new season.

The results were also a perfect continuation of Arsenal’s form after their shocking win against Chelsea on Wednesday. Nketiah netted two goals in their 4-2 win at Stamford Bridge.
