Arsene Wenger defends Nicolas Pepe’s performance

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has defended newly signed winger Nicolas Pepe over his inability to score goals.

Speaking on Monday, Wenger said that the Ivory Coast player needs more time to adapt to the style of football in England.

Arsene Wenger continued by saying that Nicolas Pepe lacks the freedom he once had in France when he played for Lille.

The former coach was however afraid that he might lose his position given the new crop youngsters making way into the first eleven of Arsenal.

At Lille, Pepe was the best player scoring in many games including the historic thrashing of PSG in Ligue 1 last season.

On Sunday, he brought his A-game against Bournemouth providing David Luiz with the ball that resulted in the only goal of the match.

Wenger went on to praise coach Unai Emery saying that he cannot judge him but he can win games in addition to playing a game that he likes.

He continued by noting that he has a huge responsibility at Arsenal and one of those responsibilities is to play attractive football.

“I’m not here to judge coaches. I am a supporter of Arsenal FC, so I just support him.

But he can win games and he plays a type of game that I like. A club like Arsenal is a huge responsibility and one of those responsibilities is to play attractive football.”
