Barcelona who looked not at their best took an early first-half lead when Luiz Suarez header deflected through Luke Shaw and into the back of the net.
Lionel Messi who was part of the first eleven squads at Old Trafford was not at his usual standards having not created most chances in the game.
Manchester United, however, have hope to flip the results when they visit the Catalans at Camp Nou.
The Red Devil will, however, blame themselves for not taking advantage of the home ground support with the best effort coming through Diogo Dalot whose header went wide.
Barcelona threatened to double the lead through Philipe Coutinho but his effort was saved by De Gea thanks to his stretched leg block.

Premier League side Manchester United will now hope to overturn Wednesday’s results in a similar fashion they did with Paris Saint Germain in France.
Previous results from Barcelona’s second leg ties have always ended worse with the Catalans destroying big clubs on home soil.
With Barcelona’s mind on another trophy this season, they will surely make it hard for Manchester United to overturn the results.
