CJ Martha Koome assures Judges protection following arrest

Chief Justice Martha Koome has assured Judges and Judicial officers protection of the constitution.

Koome was speaking following the arrest of two High Court Judges Said Chitembwe and Aggrey Muchelule who were arrested on Thursday pending investigation.

The two were grilled at DCI headquarters and later released in what has been established as an investigation into graft allegations leveled against them.

CJ Martha Koome confirmed to have been briefed by the two Judges and that their chambers at Milimani Law Courts were searched by the detectives leading to their arrest.

She however confirmed that no formal report has been presented to her as the head of the Judiciary and Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission.

It is due to the above that the Chief Justice requested all Judges to continue with discharging their services without fear in accordance with the oath of the office. Any comments have been termed inappropriate for now.

The news comes minutes after DCI confirmed the arrest and ongoing investigation of the two Judges.

“On the July 22, 2021, following allegations of corruption and abuse of office, the DCI acting on intelligence and as guided under Article 244(b) of the Constitution engaged Justice Said Juma Chitembwe, Justice Aggrey Muchelule among other accomplices to assist with investigations.

The said Judges cooperated with the investigating team, recorded their statements and left to continue with their duties. The investigations are ongoing.

As soon as they are finalized, appropriate action will be taken in consultation with all the relevant agencies and authorities as provided by the law.” Said DCI
