Court reinstates embattled Kenyatta University VC Paul Wainaina

The Employment and Labour Relations Court has reinstated sacked Kenyatta University Vice-chancellor Paul Wainaina after he refused to hand over the title deed for a government project.

The order to surrender the title was issued by the Cabinet and was to hand over to the Ministry of Lands something he failed to do leading to the University Council being dissolved altogether.

In his application to the court, Mr. Paul Wainaina requested the suspension of Prof. Waceke Wanjohi who was appointed as his replacement in an acting capacity.

He also requested the court to block the university from advertising his position and the decision by the new council to suspend him over gross misconduct allegations. The court approved the application setting July 28th as the date for the hearing.

“Pending the hearing and determination of this application inter-parties, this honorable court is pleased to issue a temporary order suspending the implementation of the decision contained in the letter dated July 12 by Professor Crispus Kiamba in toto suspending, terminating, and/or dismissing the petitioner from the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, rendering his position vacant and/or revoking his salary,” ruled the court.

The suspension of Prof. Wainaina followed an outburst by President Uhuru Kenyatta who noted that the WHO project at the university was meant to benefit Kenyans as a whole.

The Head of State noted that the country cannot operate alone and needs other African Countries’ partners in the development agenda. President Uhuru promised to deal with the matter swiftly and effectively.
