A police officer is feared dead after he was shot by a suspect at the Croydon Custody Centre in the UK as he detained him.
The suspect is reported to have produced a gun during a search which he turned to the police before shooting him at the scene.
Efforts to save the police failed as he succumbed to the injuries while receiving treatment afterwards.
The incident has since been condemned as the Home Secretary expressed how sad and shocked she was on hearing the incident.
She continued by expressing how sad it was for a police officer to pass away in the line of duty.
The sentiments were shared by the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson who expressed how huge of a debt it is to lose an officer trying to protect the people.
“My deepest condolences go to the family, friends and colleagues of the police officer who was killed in Croydon last night. We owe a huge debt to those who risk their own lives to keep us safe.” Said Prime Minister Boris Johnson
It is still unclear how the suspect could have been armed following an arrest, something that is being investigating as forensic experts arrived to conduct their very own annalysis.
The suspect will now face murder charges as opposed to illegal possession of a gun that he was to face.
