Fallen athlete Agnes Tirop laid to rest in Kapnyamisa, Nandi

Kapnyamisa village in Nandi was on Saturday filled with tears as fallen athlete and Olympian Agnes Tirop was laid to rest.

Residents and non residents turned up in thousands to pay their last respect to the fallen champions who was to celebrate her 26th birthday the same she was being laid to rest.

At just a tender age of 25-years, Tirop was flying high on the tracks having bagged a world cross country title in 2015 and two bronze medals in 2017 and 2019.

Fellow athletes joined Agnes Tirop’s family to mourn the athlete with Helen Obiri revealing how they had discussed to defending her tittle in marathon.

Exactly 10 days ago, the slain athlete was found dead at her home in Iten Elgeiyo Marakwet with deep stab wounds before investigations commenced to establish the cause of death.

A manhunt for her husband began before he was arrested in Mombasa as he attempted to flee the country. He was the prime suspect in the murder after it was also established that they had fallen out.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had already called on the police to speed up the investigation and ensure justice is served right.

Fellow athletes also called on the government to put in measures to solve gender-based violence against women given recent cases in the country.

Speaking during her burial was Nandi Governor Stephen Sang who called on the government to ensure that all properties under her name and sold by her husband Ibrahim Rotich are returned to the family.
