Mwiti won the Imenti Central Parliamentary seat in 2013 under the Alliance Party of Kenya but lost the seat in 2017 to current MP Moses Kirima who vied under the Jubilee Party.

After the elections he made it clear that he was backing off politics and venture into business as he wished President Uhuru Kenyatta all the best after clinching Presidency.

He also called on President Uhuru and ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga to hold a dialogue on the way forward for the country in order to settle the political tension in the country.

Legal battles followed the former MP as he was at risk of losing his multi-million property due to accrued debts worth Ksh 6.1 million. He was also at the risk of being declared bankrupt.

In 2018, he was also charged with three counts of rape, intimidation and assault as quoted by the Standard.

He was charged alongside David Muchiri a medical practitioner for forceful conducting HIV on the woman in question.

The former MP denied the allegation that are reported to have occurred in 2015 and also failed in his attempt to have the allegations dropped in 2017.
