Former Makadara MP Benson Mutura elected Nairobi Speaker

Former Makadara Member of Parliament (MP) Benson Mutura has been elected the new Nairobi County Speaker.

The decision was arrived at following a virtual election conducted due to the coronavirus pandemic and chaired by acting Speaker John Kamangu.

The Jubilee candidate garnered 99 votes out of 123 that were cast on Friday and officially confirming his place as the replacement of Beatrice Elachi.

Other potential candidates who were in the list included ken Ngondi, Dr. Washington Makodingo, Abdi Ali Abdi , Mike Obonyo and Allan Chacha.

The victory comes a day after Jubilee party through its Secretary-general Raphael Tuju unvailed Benson as their preferred candidate.

Tuju was speaking outside the assembly after meeting MCA’s allied to the party to make a decision on their preferred candidate.

Beatrice Elachi stepped out of the seat in what is termed as intervention from President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In her speech, she revealed how some of her political enemies brought dangerous items including sulphuric acid to affect her.
