The Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome has confirmed the scaling down of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s security detail.
Addressing journalists from Mombasa, the Inspector General of Police (IG) said that the Presidential escort commander is the assistant IG and that those tasked with the security of the Deputy President and retired President must be of lower rank.
He continued by confirming that he has since recalled the assistant IG and issued him new tasks equivalent to his rank, a move that the IG said was in good faith as he is available if any senior leader has any issues.

The statement comes hours after it was alleged that the security of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta had been scaled down from the previous 119 security officers.
Some of the General Service Unit (GSU) officers had been recalled to the GSU headquarters pending the issuance of new tasks.
The news further confirmed that security personnel attached to the first family had also been scaled down or withdrawn, a privilege they have been enjoying for decades now.
