India’s COVID-19 deaths surpass 300K amid vaccine shortage

India’s COVID-19 death toll has surpassed 300,000 to become the third country in the world behind the US and Brazil to record such high numbers of fatalities.

The news however comes at a time when the country is hit by vaccine shortage as the country battles the second wave of the virus affecting mostly the poor in rural areas.

As of Monday, the Ministry of Health in India confirmed 4,454 new COVID-19 deaths pushing the country’s COVID-19 fatalities to 303,720. The country had already recorded 50,000 deaths in less than a week.

At the same time, the same Ministry confirmed 222,315 new cases of the virus pushing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the country to 26.75 million.

According to Al Jazeera, many patients in the country are currently battling a rare kind of black fungus something that is still unfamiliar with the doctors.

Experts however worry that the number of deaths is not accurate as possible as many from rural areas where record-keeping is a problem have succumbed to the virus.

The same sentiments have been echoed by those working at crematoriums who have received many bodies compared to the daily figures being recorded by the Ministry of health.

COVID-19 vaccine shortage in India

As the virus causes havoc in India, vaccination has also dropped due to shortage forcing the Ministry of Health to halt vaccination of those between 18-44 years.

Those above that age are also experiencing difficulties to access the shot as many centers have been closed. Some of the vaccine centers closed are in the city of Pune, New Delhi and Mumbai.

It has been the plans of the government to vaccinate 300 million out of its 1.3 billion population by June this year but only 195 million have so far received the shot. Out of those vaccinated, only 43 million of them have received the second shot.
