KEBS bosses arrested over KEBS stickers

Kenya Bureau of Standards managing director Mr Charles Ongwae and six other officials have been arrested over importation of substandard fertilizer and KEBS stamps.

The arrest was made by the DCI and interrogation made at the DCI headquarters in Nairobi.

The other six officials include Eric Chesire and Erick Ochieng who are senior officals at KEBS.

When appearing today before the National Assembly Committee on Trade,Mr Ongwae said that they have conducted a chemical test on the said sugar and that it contains no mercury.

In addition to that Mr Ongwae said that the imported sugar is inspected by the KEBS of the country of origin.

On Thursday KEBS MD was quoted saying that the contraband sugar had no mercury but high levels of copper and lead,a statement that is contrary to that said by Dr. Fred Matiang’i.
