Lawrence Cherono suspended by Athletics Integrity Unit over doping

Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has suspended marathoner Lawrence Cherono from the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA after testing positive for doping.

Samples taken from Lawrence tested positive for trimetazidine, a substance prohibited by WADA after it was established how it modify the body’s way of processing fats.

“The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has today provisionally suspended marathon runner, Lawrence Cherono of Kenya and 400m runner meaning he’s out of the World Athletics Championships Oregon22.

Sample collected from Lawrence Cherono tested positive for trimetazidine, a substance that is prohibited under the 2022 WADA Prohibited List as a metabolic modulator. Substances in this category modify how the body metabolizes fat.” Said Eric Njiru

Samples from the marathoner were taken in May 23rd and were received by WADA on May 27th for testing. The results were then shared with AIU on July 13th before requesting explanation from Lawrence Cherono as to why he should not be suspended from the provincial level of the games.

After reviewing the case, AIU settled to suspend him altogether from the competition on July 15th.
