City Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has revealed plans to sue telecom giants Safaricom over data mining.
According to the Lawyer, he has received a number of complains from Kenyan subscribers and will next week file a class action against the company.
“Seeing the overwhelming response by Kenyan subscribers of Safaricom,I will INSHAALLAH formally write to them next week and then formally start a CLASS ACTION..Safaricom has been MINING DATA and then GIVES access to third parties to our telephones…KENYANS this is how law is made.” Said Lawyer Ahmednasir.
- Kenyans demand justice for woman mistreated by a chief
- Former CJ Chunga turns down DPP Hajji’s appointment
- Safaricom to roll out free airtime, bundles to health workers
- Safaricom and Vodacom jointly acquire the M-Pesa brand
Kenyans have for sometime now questioned Safaricom after receiving messages from unknown people who they have never reached out to before.
They have been been enrolled to a number of services which end up charging them until when they unsubscribe from them.
According to the Lawyer, he suspects Safaricom has been charging the entities involved thus sharing the data to them.
“Lately, I have been receiving unsolicited sms from these numbers inter alia..21026, 23050, 40720, Creditinfo BNTSMS, Senti, 60040…and others. It’s very obvious that Safaricom_Care, SafaricomPLC allows 3rd parties to have access to my number without my permission.
This is Obviously a gross infringement on my right to privacy under Art 31 of the Constitution. I suspect this breach of privacy is rampant and Safaricom may be charging fees the entities it gives access to phone data.I think a class action is an appropriate step. What do u think people?.” Said Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi
