Lionel Messi agrees new contract and pay cut with Barcelona

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has reached a verbal agreement extending his contract with the club for five year and salary deduction by 50%.

Messi and Barcelona had failed to agree to a new contract as his contract expired on June 30th this year. He then became a free agent effective July 1st 2021.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner will now see his contract expire as he turns 39 years and have spent a total of 26 years at his boyhood club. Messi is currently 34-years of age.

Last week on Saturday, Messi led Argentina win the Copa America trophy after beating Brazil in the finals. It was the first major international trophy for the 34-year-old.

Last year in June, Lionel Messi shook the football industry after submitting his transfer request away from Barcelona following international disagreement of then President Josep Maria Bartomeu.

Legal challenges saw his request turned down as several of his previous teammates left the club including the likes of Luiz Suarez. Manchester City were poised to be eying his signature.

Josep Maria resigned afterwards following dwindled successes of the club on and off the pitch. He was later arrested by police who were investigating smear campaign allegations targeting former players.

Former President Laporte won the elections and expressed how optimistic Messi will stay at the club and that he will build a strong squad around him.
