Millers confirm maize flour price reduction by Ksh 2

Kenyans should expect a drop in the price of maize flour by Ksh 2 as confirmed by millers following the withdrawal of all levies by the government.

Speaking with Nation, United Grain Millers Association (UGMA) noted that the announcement by Agriculture CS Peter Munya was so insignificant to the price of the staple commodity.

“The move is so insignificant, we need a serious government intervention on making the maize available in order to cut down significantly on the cost of flour,” Said UGMA chairman Ken Nyaga.

The announcement which will be gazetted by Thursday is expected to reduce the price of the precious commodity after the price shot from Ksh 90 per two kg to Ksh 210 per kg in less than a month.

Currently the government three types of levies on the importation of maize and they include Import Declaration Fee charged by KRA, Certificate of Conformity fee charged by KEBS and the phytosanitary fee charged by the Kenya Health Inspectorate Service.

The withdrawal of the levies by the government will however run for a period of 90 days as a measure taken by the government to reduce the price of maize flour in the country.

UGMA chairman Ken Nyaga has however advised the government to work closely with other neighbouring countries like Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia to abolish the export charges which have since been doubled.
