Investments, Trade, and Industries Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria will sign the necessary instruments that will allow duty-free imports of GMO and non-GMO maize in the country.

“In view of the food situation in the country, I shall be signing instruments to allow duty-free imports of GMO and non-GMO Maize for the next 6 months.” Said CS Kuria

The news comes at a time when the country is engaged in a discussion as to whether GMO farming should be legalized.

Those opposing the discussion noted that the plans by the government to fight the ongoing drought using GMOs are not sustainable in the long run. They further noted the health issues highlighted by the consumption of the products, a matter that is yet to be declared safe.
