Motorist stabs to death boda boda rider in Meru over a cap

A motorist has been arrested after stabbing to death a 25-year-old boda boda rider in Meru due to a fallen cap that the deceased was picking.

The Monday incident is reported to have occurred when Ian Mwenda fell his cap due to strong winds and stopped to pick it up. The motorist came out of his car tempered as to why he was blocking his way.

“An infuriated motorist believed to have stabbed a boda boda rider to death in Meru County is behind bars. It emerged that Ian Mwenda, 25, was riding from Maua towards Antubochiu Market on Monday evening when strong winds blew off his cap. It fell on the road.

He turned back to pick up his cap unaware that death was lurking in the shadows. George Miriti Kalung’e, who was driving behind the rider in a navy blue Probox Succeed, is reported to have been enraged when Mwenda stopped his motorcycle on the road and bent to pick his cap.

A witness told officers from Maua police station that Miriti stopped his vehicle and angrily charged at the rider, demanding to know why he had stopped on the road. He mocked the rider “if he wanted to be knocked (dead).”” Said DCI

After quarreling, the boda boda rider left the scene only for the suspect to charge towards him and block his way where he is said to have pulled out a knife stabbing Ian on the chest and left him dead.

“To avoid a confrontation, Mwenda drove off toward lowerAntubochiu Market. But an angry Miriti followed him at high speed and overtook him a few metres ahead.

He blocked the rider, came out of his vehicle armed with a knife and suddenly stabbed him. The knife tore through Mwenda’s chest from the front left side. He dropped dead on the road.” Said DCI

Witnesses who saw the incident rushed the 25-year-old to the nearest hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

A manhunt for for the suspect was immediately launched and was arrested with bloodstained clothes and smashed windscreen. He will be arraigned in court to answer to murder charges.

“Good Samaritans rushed him to Maua Methodist Hospital but doctors confirmed he had already breathed his last. Officers from Maua police station immediately launched a manhunt for the assailant and arrested him at Mutuati area.

Police seized his vehicle, whose windscreen had been smashed, and blood stained clothes. The exhibits have been preserved for further forensic examination. As the suspect awaits arraignment for murder, the search for the murder weapon continues.” Said DCI
