Narok County police officers have on Monday arrested a 40-year old man married to a 9-year old during their “honeymoon”
Residents in the area alerted the police who then acted swiftly arresting the suspect identified as John Nchoe.
It was during the interrogation that the suspect revealed he had already paid a dowry of the 9-year old child and that he was allowed by the child’s parent’s in-law to marry her wondering why he was being arrested.
The minor on the hand is reported to have refused the marriage and that she wanted to pursue her education but her plea fell on deaf ears.
The suspect John Nchoe is said to have been warned from marrying the minor but he refused.
Relatives of the young girl are said to have tried to stop the police from arresting Nchoe but to no avail.
Nchoe has since been detained as he waits to be arraigned in court to answer to charges.
The government through the ministry of education is worried at the trend where girls in semi-arid areas luck behind in terms of education compared to their male counterparts.
Debates have been organized as education is being passed around on the effects of early child marriages and the need for young girls in such regions to get an education.
