Nation Media Group’s statement on attempted journalist abduction

Nation Media Gropu has on Wednesday issued a statement on the attempted abduction of Nation journalist in Homa Bay on September 3rd 2018.

The letter comes after the sad announcement of Ms. Sharon Otieno who was together with Barak Oduor a journalist of Nation Media. Mr. Barack who escaped death by a whisker sustained serious wounds before receiving treatment In Kisumu.

In the letter, the media power house condemns the attempted abduction of Mr. Barack Oduor and is saddened by the news of the death of Ms. Sharon who was with Mr. Oduor at that time. They further said that Mr. Oduor’s abduction was actually a case of attempted murder.

Nation Media Group sent their condolences to the family of Ms. Sharon and called for the National Police Service and the Director of Public Prosecution to speedily conclude the investigations, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of the attack.


Nation Media further points out that there are rampant cases of violence and harassment of journalists (from Government agencies) affecting their work and independence.

They therefore demand the government to guarantee the protection of journalists as they execute their mandate as provided by the law as failure to do undermines the Government‘s declaration.

Nation Media also reassured there journalists that they will continue to protect their rights to report freely and responsibly.
