NLC chairman arraigned in court,denies charges

National Lands Commission chairman Muhammud Swazuri and 16others including Kenya Railways Managing director Atanas Maina have today denied graft charges leveled against them.

The accused were today arraigned in cour to answer corruption charges and conspiracy to defraud the government Ksh 221 million. In addition to that, they were also charged with abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of land, neglect of official duty and breach of trust.

Also charged alongside Mr. Swazuri and Atnas were National Land Commission Chief Executive Officer Tom Chavangi, Salome Munubi(valuation and taxation), Francis Mugo(finance), Victor Kariuki, Elijah Nyamu and john Mwaniki.

NLC is accused of letting Kenya Railways buy its own land with intention of selling the selling the same land to the government.

They denied the charges leveled against them. During the hearing, three companies Dasahe Limited, Keibukwo Investment Limited and Olomotit Estate Limited were also attached to the case.

The alleged offences happened between July 1999 and June 2018. Prosecutors pledged with court to treat the office as serious crimes and the accused should be denied bond.

The accused were arrested over the weekend. In their defense, the defense team asked the court to grant the suspects bail as they are civil servants and cannot run away from a jurisdiction.
