Arsenal has completed and confirmed the signing of Nuno Tavares from Benfica on a long term contract as revealed by the club.
The 21-year-old defender emerged from Benfica youth system and made his debut for Benfica B in 2018 and eventually getting a promotion to the first team. He was crucial in Benfica’s Super Cup win against Sporting Lisbon in August 2019.
In the last two season with Benfica, Tavares made 21 appearance and was part of Benfica squad that faced Arsenal in the Europa League last season coming in late in the clash.

Speaking after the news was Arsenal technical director Edu who praised Tavares as the perfect backup in the left-back position.
“Nuno is a talented young player who was wanted by a number of clubs across Europe. He will provide strong back-up in the left-back position. We look forward to him growing and developing with us and becoming an important member of the first-team squad.” Said Edu.
Coach Mikel Arteta has also praised the new signing as terming him a great promise who will give the squad the extra strength and option in defense.
“We welcome Nuno to the club. He is a young player with great promise who has developed very well with Benfica in recent seasons and has also shown his quality by being part of Portugal Under-21s. Nuno’s arrival will give the squad extra strength and options in defence, particularly with this energy on the left side of the pitch. We look forward to Nuno’s arrival soon, his integration into the Arsenal family and playing in front of our fantastic supporters.” Said Arteta.
He will join the rest of the squad once he undergoes isolation as per UK regulations for those coming in from Portugal. He will wear number 20 shirt.
