President of Panama diagnosed with blood cancer

The President of Panama Laurentino Cortizo has on Monday confirmed that he has been diagnosed with blood cancer even he feels well and is in good spirits.

The President underwent medical checkup back in May where the doctors noted a decrease in his blood quantity and white blood cell count.

He was then recommended for specialized treatment including a bone marrow biopsy where samples were taken to a laboratory in the US. The results revealed that he had an acute myelodysplastic syndrome, which a type of cancer that hinders production of white blood cells in the body.

President Laurentino Cortizo underwent further medical checkup in the United States in July in a hospital in Houston to establish the extent of the disease.

According to specialists, the type of blood cancer that the President is having mainly affects platelets and white blood cells in the body making the patient feel week and loss weight rapidly.

The cancer can also be caused by a genetic disorder which manifests in later years or above 60 years.
