One person has been arrested and suspected contraband sugar impounded in Kitui,Matuu and Mwingi during a raid by police.

The raids were done in godowns belonging to Mt Kenya wholesalers who were ready to release it to the public market.

Speaking to Nation Kitui Central OCPD Muthuri Mwongera said ““Our preliminary investigations have established that import duty wasn’t paid on the sugar but we have put the consignment on a 24-hour police guard to avert any possibility of it being sold to the market,”

Mr Mwongera said the consignment was similar to that impounded at Nairobi which was suspected to contain poisonous substances but they will wait for results after analysis.

Mr Mwongera also added that police officers have been deployed in all warehouses suspected to hold the contraband sugar vowing to ensure safety of residents in Kitu,Matuu and Mwingi.
