Azimio La Umoja Presidential candidate Hon. Raila Odinga has picked Martha Karua as his running mate in the August 9th elections.
Speaking from Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Hon. Raila Odinga described the Narc-Kenya party leader as a human rights activist who had stood strong as a test of true leadership.
“I needed a true Joshua on my corner, one who will not be a turn coat. After along search and reflection, together with consultation, I have arrived at the decision that the holder of this position must be a woman,” Said Raila

Raila continued by saying that as a presidential candidate he is looking for a running mate who will also be a co-worker and not a competitor. “The office of the Deputy President is a workshop which cannot compete with the presidency. The holder must be a co-worker” Said Raila
Cabinet Secretaries nominations
Before the confirmation of Martha Karua, Hon. Raila unveiled a number of nominations for the Cabinet Secretary(CS). Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has been nominated as the overall in-charge of all Cabinet Secretaries.
Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho has been nominated as the CS for Lands as Peter Munya retains his seat as CS for Agriculture. Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has been nominated as the CS for Treasury.
“I also nominate Kenneth Marende as the speaker of the senate. I also nominate Oparanya as CS for Treasury,” Said Raila
Martha Karua acceptance speech
Speaking after the announcement, Martha Karua dedicated nomination to all women in Kenya terming herself as a trendsetter in the politics of Kenya. She continued by congratulating fellow candidates in the same position.
“”I am deeply honored by the decision to nominate me as the deputy president of the coalition. i am aware of the responsibility and this nomination is a collective honour that cannot be left f me alone to savor. It is personal journey but also a national journey,” Said Karua
