Marco Asensio doubled the lead in the 57th minute thanks to another assist from on form Vinicius Jr. who was crowned player of the month November before the Sunday night clash.

The win was the 10th one in a row for Carlo Ancelotti’s side who have lost twice only twice in their last 23 fixtures and none since October when the former Everton coach took over.

Atletico Madrid sit fourth in the table with 29 points from 16 matches played and 3 adrift of Real Madrid who are eight points ahead of second placed Sevilla.

Antoine Griezmann threatened to pull one for the host but his freekick was pushed away by Thibaut Courtois who made five other saves in the clash.

Even with the introduction of Luis Suarez, Real Madrid resisted most of their attacks and severally threatened from counter attacks.

In other results of the weekend, Barcelona moved to sixth point after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Osasuna over the weekend.
