Rugby players Wanyama and Mahaga sentence delayed

A Nairobi court has on Friday delayed the sentencing of two rugby players Frank Wanyama and Alex Mahaga after they were found guilty of gang-raping a woman.

The two players were accused of gang-raping a musician who claimed to have been drugged during the whole ordeal.

Presenting her story on social media in February last year, the musician said she had attended a birthday party at one apartment in Nairobi alongside the two accused.

She continued by saying she was afraid to report the matter due to shock, denial, and profile of one of the players.

In their defense, the players claim the affair was consensual and that she is trying to extort money from them.

Passing the judgment, Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku was convinced by the plaintiff’s version more than the accused.

The defense has in the meantime pleaded with the court to hand a non-custodial sentence as the two are prolific players who represent the country well.

However, the prosecution has requested for a 15-year jail sentence to send a message to the youth not to take advantage to a fellow youth of the opposite sex.

Currently, Frank Wanyama and Alex Mahaga have been discontinued from their studies and face a possible 15 years imprisonment of a life sentence.
