Three dead as 7-storey building collapses in Kirigiti, Kiambu County

Several people are feared trapped after a seven-storey building collapsed in Kirigiti, Kiambu County on Monday morning.

At the time of publishing, three people had been confirmed dead and several others were reported to have sustained injuries and had been taken Kiambu Level Five Hospital for treatment.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi was among those who arrived at the sight when he was heading to his office in the morning.

“Devastating News This Morning! I was driving to the office this morning, and was diverted to the site of a building under construction that collapsed at Kirigiti in Kiambu Town.

Through the combined efforts of the Kiambu County Fire & Disaster Management Department, Kenya Police, Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Red Cross and volunteers, the search continues for those trapped under the debris.

Rescue and search efforts undergoing at Kirigiti collapsed six-storeyed building. Several people have already been pulled out of the rubble, and rushed to the hospital. Sadly, some are feared to have succumbed to their injuries.” Said Governor Wamatangi

According to the Governor, the building had been constructed in complete ignorance of building standards as he promised residents of taking the assignment to ensure that such incidents do not occur under his watch.
