Three Venezuelans are not IEBC or Smartmatic personnel, DCI

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed little known details leading to the arrest of three Venezuelans at JKIA with election materials.

The three who were termed IEBC personnel by the commission were arrested with 17 rolls of electoral materials namely stickers with one roll being empty as confirmed by the detectives.

Jose Gregorio, the suspect found with the bag, termed the contents as his personal luggage even after his second bag was found with one personal laptop, one personal monitor, five flash disks, one mobile phone and assorted computer accessories.

It was established that the materials were properties of IEBC and the Republic of Kenya thus the arrest even though the suspect claimed to have received that consignment in Panama from his company Smartmatic International B.V and was to be delivered to one Abdulahi Abdi Mohamed’s office in Nairobi.

What baffled the police is that Abdulahi Abdi Mohamed picked the three from Panama and not any country and were in the country to transact personal business with him while in possession of electoral materials belonging to IEBC.

Investigations into the three Venezuelans revealed that they have in the past flied using expired passports and were neither confirmed to be IEBC or Smartmatic officials for that matter.

The statement by DCI is contrary to what was issued by IEBC crying foul over intimidation ahead of the elections. They further claimed that the three are their personnel who were in the country on official duty.
