Tokyo accident leaves several injured on New Year’s eve

One person was seriously injured as eight others were injured when a vehicle rammed into a crowd in Tokyo.

The early Tuesday accident happened as the crowd was celebrating the New Year. So far the driver of the vehicle is said to have been arrested on claims of terror attack.

The scene of the accident is reported to have initially been closed so as to accommodate the large number of people.

Harajuku is famously known as a tourist center where thousands of people gather making their way into Meiji Shrine for prayers.

Pictures from the Tuesday Tokyo accident showed a grey vehicle surrounded by several policemen with its front area seriously damaged.

The driver of the vehicle is said to have tried to flee the scene of the accident before he was caught 20 minutes later. Atleast 20 litres of kerosene were recovered from the vehicle.

In 2008 a similar attack occurred in Tokyo when a man driving a rental car run over a crowd of pedestrian before jumping out and stubbing several people.

Seven people were reported dead from the attack with a dozen others injured.
