UAE president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed dies aged 73

United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed has on Friday died at the age of 73 years as confirmed by state media WAM.

In his place as per the constitution will be Vice President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum will run the seven emirates until when the federal council appoints a new President in the next 30 days.

Born in 1948, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed came into power in 2004 and has since headed the rich emirate Abu Dhabi and is expected to be succeeded by Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan who is also the half-brother of the deceased has been in power temporarily after the President suffered a stroke and flown to the US to receive treatment in 2014.
