In a statement on their website, they said that they are proceeding with caution as they ensure that safety is on top of their priorities.

According to the feature, a driver is expected to upload a selfie of himself wearing a mask and it will automatically detect before sending an in app message as notification.

Drivers in countries such as the United States, India, Canada and other European countries without masks have been warned they will be locked out of the app.

In addition to the feature, a checklist has also been put in place for the driver to confirm if they have indeed following the health guidelines including sanitization and washing of hands.

The maximum allowed number of passengers in the UberX has been reduced from 4 to 3 in addition to having passengers open windows ensuring there is enough ventilation in the vehicle.

In terms of accountability, drivers have been advised to feel free to cancel trips at anytime they feel they are not safe.

It is due to the pandemic that Uber has pumped in $50 million to purchase protective items for their drivers including masks, gloves, hand sanitizers and spray disinfectamts.
