US basketball star Brittney Griner freed in prison swap

American basketball star Brittney Griner has been released from Russian prison following a successful swap between the two countries.

Brittney is currently safe under the custody of the US and is flying home as confirmed by President Joe Biden who spoke to her a few minutes ago. “She is safe. She is on a plane. She is on her way home,” Said Biden

Also confirming the news was the Russian foreign minister who said that the exchange involved arms dealer Viktor Bout.

Even though Brittney has been released, Paul Whelan, a former US Marine is still in prison after he was arrested by Russians on allegations that he was spying back in 2018.

Speaking on his release, President Joe Biden vowed to push for his release that was meant to be done alongside the NBSA star but Russia declined.

“Sadly, Russia is treating Paul’s case different than Brittney’s and even though we have not secured Paul’s release we will never give up,” Said Biden

The WNBA champion was arrested back in February after has found in possession of vape cartridges with small amount of bhang and later sentenced to nine years in prison.

In her defense, Brittney confirmed that she had obtained doctor’s orders to used marijuana due to he many injuries and that she had no intention to break the law. She pleaded guilty to the charges.
