Wiper denies clearing Sonko for Mombasa gubernatorial seat

Wiper Democratic Movement has denied reports that former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been cleared to vie for the Mombasa governor seat.

Confirming the news was Wiper Secretary-General Shakila Abdalla who noted that the party has already issued a direct ticket to Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo during the party’s National Delegates Congress (NDC) at Bomas of Kenya.

The news is however contrary to a leaked list from Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of candidates vying for the seat that included the name of the former Nairobi Governor.

Sonko’s political journey

Sonko embarked on his political journey in 2010 where he was elected Makadara MP before representing Nairobi in the Senate in 2013. In 2017 he was elected the Governor before he impeached in 2020.

His term as Governor was filled with controversies including the departure of his deputy Polycarp Igathe. The seat remained empty despite pleas to appoint a female candidate.

A vote of no confidence was tabled and passed by the County Assembly and the final nail of the coffin was confirmed by the Senate in December 2020.

In March 2022 Sonko and his entire family was barred from entering the US over alleged corruption dealing during his tenure as the Governor
