Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe shot in the head

Colombian Senator and Presidential candidate Miguel Uribe is critical condition after he was shot in the head on Saturday in Bogota.

The 39-year-old Senator was shot as he addressed his supporters under a tree as seen in a video shared on social media revealing the events before and after the event.

Miguel Uribe who is a member of the opposition conservative Democratic was at the time campaigning for Presidency when the incident occurred.

Opposition leaders have already condemned the act as his wife Maria Claudia Tarazona confirmed that he was ‘fighting for his life.’

Speaking after the incident was the country’s Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez who confirmed the arrest of one suspect and that investigations are underway to establish if there are others involved.

The government has issued a  $730,000 for anyone with information into the incident as the President condemned it calling for an immediate investigation.

Condemning the attack was U.S Secretary Marco Rubio who termed it a direct threat to democracy and the result of the violent leftist rhetoric coming the government.

“The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms the attempted assassination of Senator Miguel Uribe. This is a direct threat to democracy and the result of the violent leftist rhetoric coming from the highest levels of the Colombian government.

Having seen firsthand Colombia’s progress over the past few decades to consolidate security and democracy, it can’t afford to go back to dark days of political violence.

President Petro needs to dial back the inflammatory rhetoric and protect Colombian officials. We stand in prayer with Miguel’s family, loved ones, and his supporters. Those responsible for this attack must face justice.” he said
