The High Court has issued orders blocking Moi University from firing its employees following reports that it was overstaffed.
Issuing the orders was Lady Justice Maureen Onyango who blocked the university from issuing the letters until when the case filed by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) is heard and determined.
“Upon hearing the counsel for the applicant/claimant and the counsel for the respondent, it is hereby ordered that the letters of redundancy dated 13/5/2025 are hereby suspended pending hearing of this Application and the Application dated 28/4/2025,” said Justice Maureen
The news comes at a time when the university noted that they influx of staff has caused them to face financial constraints from there side, a matter that needs to be dealt with.
“We regret to inform you that due to financial constraints currently facing the University, a decision has been made to implement a Right-Sizing Exercise, which we have carried out in compliance with Section 40 of the Employment Act, 2007 and the provisions of the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.” read the notice
The case before court will be mentioned on 28th May 2025.
