The government through its spokesperson has clarified on the 33,835 metric tonnes of fertilizer donated by Russia to Kenya.
Through a statement, the government confirmed that the fertilizer was locally blended into over 2 million bags of fertilizer for maize, tea, and rice.
The fertilizer was then sold to farmer at Ksh 2,500, a subsidized price that saved farmers Ksh 2 billion, and so was 16,000MT of urea donated by Algeria that also saved farmers Ksh 729 million.
“What happened to the 33,835 metric tonnes of fertilizer raw materials donated by Russia to Kenya? Russia donated 33,835MT of raw materials, which were locally blended into over 2 million bags of fertilizer for maize, tea, and rice.
The government subsidized each 50kg bag at Ksh 2,500, saving farmers Ksh 2 billion. Algeria donated 16,000MT of urea, producing 561,000 bags of top-dressing fertilizer blended with lime to improve soil health. Savings to farmers another Ksh 729 million under the NFSP.” said Spokesperson Government
