IPOA respond to fatal shooting of George Gathu Matheri in Nyeri

Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA)  has responded to a shooting incident involving police officers from Karatina Police Station in Nyeri County.

The incident led to the shooting of Mr. George Gathu Matheri following a confrotation with the police who were on patrol at the time.

“The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) last night learnt of a shooting incident allegedly involving some police officers from Karatina Police Station, Mathira East Sub-County within Nyeri County.

During the incident which happened at around 2300 hours on 18th January 2025, Mr. George Gathu Matheri was fatally shot following a brief confrontation with police officers who were on patrol within Karatina Town.

The police officer suspected to have shot the late Mr. Matheri has so far been arrested and detained for further processing to be arraigned in court,” said IPOA

The incident led to unrest by locals who barricaded the Nairobi-Karatina highway as well as vandalizing property in the process.

“Following Mr. Matheri’s death, heightened tension in the area where the local residents barricaded the Nairobi-Karatina highway and paralysed smooth flow of traffic as well as vandalising property of unknown value.

IPOA has already dispatched a Rapid Response Team from Nyeri Regional Office to commence investigations and gather all relevant information to establish the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident,” read the statement.

IPOA confirmed that they have seized the scene of crime where they will collect evidence. Thay have calledf for calm as they handle the investigation and eventual prosecution of those involved.

“IPOA has so far seized the scene of incidence and collecting crucial evidence for forensic and ballistic analysis.

In addition, IPOA condoles with the family of Mr. Matheri and appeals to the public to be calm. Further, the Authority calls for anyone who may have witnessed the incident from the area to come forward with information that may assist in the ongoing investigation.

Lastly, IPOA assures the public that all efforts are being made to achieve justice for the family of the deceased,” said IPOA
