Khalwale Removed as Senate Majority Whip

The removal of Boni Khalwale as Senate Majority Whip was officially confirmed by Senate Speaker Amason Kingi. The decision follows a formal resolution by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

Speaker Kingi told senators on Tuesday that his office had received the official minutes from a UDA meeting held on December 2, 2025. The document outlined the decision to strip Khalwale of the whip position in line with Standing Order 22(5). Consequently, the change met all legal and procedural requirements and took effect immediately.

David Wafula Wakoli Named Replacement

Following Khalwale’s removal, Bungoma Senator David Wafula Wakoli has been elected as the new Senate Majority Chief Whip. This leadership change marks a significant shift within the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

The communication to the Senate stated that Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot had forwarded the minutes and attendance list from the meeting. According to the documents, senators unanimously endorsed Wakoli as Khalwale’s replacement.

“I am satisfied that the change was made in accordance with Standing Order 22(5) and (7) of the Senate, and meets the threshold required,” Kingi said.

Tension with UDA Preceded Removal

The decision comes after months of tension between Khalwale and the ruling party. Trouble began when he supported Seth Panyako of DAP-K in the Malava by-election instead of UDA’s David Ndakwa. During the campaign, Khalwale appeared alongside opposition leaders, including Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa.

Despite their efforts, Panyako lost, and Ndakwa won the seat in a closely contested race. This outcome deepened friction between Khalwale and UDA.

Party Leaders Call for Action

Several leaders openly criticised Khalwale for defying the party’s stance. Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei was among the most vocal, calling for the removal of Boni Khalwale as Senate Majority Whip.

With Wakoli now in office, the government expects renewed order within its Senate ranks. He will be responsible for coordinating government business and maintaining discipline among Kenya Kwanza senators.

Khalwale Reacts Briefly

“A day in politics…”
