Mbagathi Hospital has suspended all services to prisoners over a Ksh 12 million debt owed by the Kenya Prisons Services.
The suspension, which took effect on August 4th has left inmates stranded as both the hospital and the Kenya Prisons Services are left in a deadlock with no solution yet in sight.

According to the hospital, between July 2018 and November 2022 the accumulated debt stood at Ksh 6.7 million and the debt eventually hit the Ksh 12 million mark by November 2024.
Despite efforts to have the payment done, Mbagathi Hospital confirmed that no efforts have been made to settle it.
The hospital now claims that the debt has hindered them from procuring essential supplies, thus the decision to suspend treatment of inmates.
The Kenya Prisons Service has appealed the decision calling on the hospital to allow treatment of inmates as they work on resolving the issue.
