Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has issued a set of precautionary measures to be undertaken following an alert issued by the Kenya Met Department.
The department confirmed that Mombasa is set to be hit by strong winds and waves between 23rd and 25th May 2025.
“Following the advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department on 22nd May 2025 warning of strong southerly winds and large waves expected along the Kenyan Coast, His Excellency Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir, Governor of Mombasa, convened an emergency meeting of the County Disaster Preparedness Committee.
The meeting brought together all relevant stakeholders, including representatives from the National Government Administrative Office – State Department for Interior, National Police Service, Kenya Maritime Authority, Kenya Coast Guard Service, Kenya Red Cross, beach management units, and disaster response agencies.
The Meteorological Department has projected wind speeds of up to 25 knots (12.9 m/s) and wave heights of up to 2.5 meters between 23rd and 25th May 2025, posing serious risks to public safety, marine activities, coastal infrastructure, and coastal communities.” said Governor Abdulswamad.
It is due to the alert that the county government has closed off public beaches for the next two days with immediate effect, suspension of ocean based activities including fishing until further notice and issuance of daily updates until when the alert is cleared.
“Residents and visitors are urged to comply fully with these safety measures. The County Government is working in close coordination with emergency and maritime agencies to manage the evolving situation and safeguard lives and property.” said the Governor.
