Senior police explains inconsistency in records in Rex Masai murder inquest

A senior police officer at Central Police Station has explained the inconsistency of the records during the inquest into Rex Masai’s murder.

Fredrick Okapesi denied allegations of a plot to cover up the truth from coming out, and that there was no plot to cover up records from the firearm register.

Appearing before the court, he noted that the records are manually generated and therefore prone to errors. He continued by saying that police officers are allowed to strike through a record or backwash it, if the error occurred in good faith.

“There was no attempt to hide the truth,” said Fredrick as he confirmed that no demonstration had happened a day before Rex Masai’s fatal shooting.

Fredrick called on the court to rely on the register for credible information in the murder inquest.

Okapesi was facing allegations that police officers at  Central Police Station were handed weapons without following the right channel during the anti-government demonstrations.

He, however, admitted to an oversight in Corporal Githinji after his signature appeared on the register even though he thought he had erased it. He, however, maintained his stand that no weapon can be issued without getting a signature.

The records also revealed that Constable Isaiah Murangiri was issued with a weapon on  June 20th, 21st, and 22nd.

Murangiri, who is the prime suspect in the murder, denied the claims that he was at the scene of the crime on the fateful day and that the images are not that clear.
