Two shot dead in Gem after protestors stormed police post

Two people were shot dead on Monday after demonstrators stormed Ramula police post in Gem, Siaya County as confirmed by the police.

Speaking after the incident was Gem Sub-County Police Commander Charles Wafula, who said that the group was demonstrating over a gold mining firm that had been licensed to kick off its activities in the area.

According to the Police Commander, the protestors were from the neighbouring Vihiga County.

He continued by saying that they first blocked the Ramula–Luanda road before heading to Ramula market and later to the police post, causing destruction.

They destroyed the windows before setting a tractor parked at the compound on fire, forcing the police to react and fire in the air to disperse them.

The police were, however, overwhelmed by the crowd, leading to the death of the two youths whose names are yet to be revealed.

Their bodies have since been taken to Yala Sub-County Hospital mortuary as confirmed by Siaya County Commissioner Nobert Komora.

Speaking after the incident was Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo, who condemned the incident and urged the aggrieved parties to first seek dialogue before resorting to demonstrations.

The MP also called on Vihiga residents not to involve Ramula residents in their disputes.
