University Graduate Rescued After Suicide Attempt

Residents of Galilee area in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, were shocked on Tuesday when a young woman climbed a high-voltage transmission pylon in an apparent suicide attempt.

Fortunately, Kenya Power officials and Kiambu County firefighters responded quickly. They worked together to rescue her safely from the estimated 40-meter-tall pylon.

The woman, a university graduate, reportedly struggled with depression, largely due to unemployment.

A friend explained, “We get educated, yet there are no jobs. My friend had finished her studies but could not find work. This leads many young people to depression.” She urged the government to address the growing unemployment crisis among graduates.

Meanwhile, a parent who witnessed the event expressed deep concern about mental health challenges among youth.

“We are shocked by what is happening. Our children, no matter how well they study, are trying to take their lives. This lady climbed nearly 40 meters up the pylon. Thankfully, the whole community called for help,” the parent said.

In response, residents have called on the government and Kenya Power to fence off the pylons. They argued that such measures could prevent similar incidents, especially among vulnerable youth and children.

Furthermore, locals stressed the importance of raising awareness and promoting open conversations about mental health.
