Acting Police IG Masengeli defies court summon over Kitengela abduction

Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli has once again defied court orders and failed to appear before the court where he was summoned over the abduction of three men in Kitengela.

Through his legal team, the court was informed that the police boss was official duty in Mombasa and that they were requesting for new date to appear before the court.

They further called on the court to allow Masengeli attend to the session online, a request that was turned down by Justice Lawrence Mugambi.

“I have information that my client is in Mombasa for a must-attend workshop on the validation forum for the final review of workplan and budget.” said State Counsel Wanjiku Mwangi.

Representing the prosecution team was Lawyer Rebbeca Omwenga who noted that the Acting Police IG who is expected to uphold the rule of law is the one defying court orders.

“It is quite shocking that the officer who is supposed to uphold the rule of law is the one defying orders. We’re therefore praying that he be held in contempt, because as the ruling stated; the court has teeth and it can bite. It is high time that it bit and it bit hard.” she said

The sitting was however adjourned to 3pm to allow the police IG to attend to the session but his legal team requested to have their client to do it virtually, a request that was denied.

“Is it difficult for someone to come and explain something grave as the matter before us? What is difficult?” said Justice Lawrence Mugambi.

Due to the situation, families and activists disrupted the activities of the court for the Judge to adjourn the session once again.
