Equity Bank Rwanda confirms attempted fraudulent activities

Equity Bank Rwanda has confirmed attempted fraudulent activities involving certain banking transactions in the country.

In a statement, the bank confirmed that its systems detected irregular activity and immediately triggered its security and incident response protocols.

They further confirmed that swift containment measures were tajen and are now working closely with the authorities.

According to the bank, majority of the transactions were successfully reversed within 24 hours as they continue to coordinate with the relevant authorities, including the National Bank of Rwanda.

“Equity Bank Rwanda is aware of reports circulating regarding attempted fraudulent activities involving certain banking transactions.

Our internal monitoring systems detected the irregular transaction activity and immediately triggered the security and incident response protocols in line with operational and risk management procedures. Swift containment measures were implemented, with the Bank working closely with the relevant authorities.

Through these actions, majority of the transactions were reversed successfully within 24 hours of the incident. Investigations into the matter are ongoing in coordination with law enforcement agencies and regulatory authorities, including the National Bank of Rwanda,” read the statement

Customers and stakeholders have been assured that their deposits are safe and that no customer funds have been lost.

“We wish to reassure our customers and stakeholders that customer deposits and accounts remain safe and secure, and the Bank’s operations continue as normal. No customer funds have been lost.

Equity Bank Rwanda maintains a zero-tolerance approach to financial crime and continues to strengthen its cybersecurity infrastructure, transaction monitoring systems, and internal controls to safeguard customer assets and maintain the highest standards of financial security,” read the statement
