Former DRC President Joseph Kabila sentenced to death in absentia

Former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila has been sentenced to death for treason and war crimes.

The sentencing follows allegations that the former President had been supporting M23 rebels, who have been causing havoc in the country.

Other charges levelled against him include crimes against humanity, and war crimes, including murder, sexual assault, torture and insurrection, charges that he had denied.

According to Kabila, the courts were being used wrongly to oppress people even though he was not present at the time.

The 54-year-old has ruled the country for 18 years following the death of his father Laurent who was shot dead in 2001.

In 2019, he handed power to President Félix Tshisekedi before going into exile in 2023 after they fell out.

Tshisekedi has since accused the former President of funding M23 before stripping off his immunity leading to his prosecution.

M23 rebels are known for reigning terror in the cities of Goma, Bukavu and two airports in the eastern region.

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda has also been accused of meddling into the affairs of Congo and backing the rebels, allegations that he has denied.
