KenGen confirms fire incident at the Ngong Wind Power Facility

Kenya’s Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has confirmed a fire incident that occurred at the Ngong Wind Power Facilty on Tuesday, 20th January, 2026.

Through a statement, they revealed that the incident involved one wind turbine during a perod of scheduled routine maintenance and no injuries were sustained in the process.

“KenGen wishes to confirm that at approximately 1500 hours on Tuesday the 20th of January 2026, an isolated incident occurred at the Ngong Wind Power Facility involving one wind turbine.

The incident occurred during a period of scheduled routine maintenance. No injuries were sustained, and all personnel on site were safely accounted for following the incident, aided by established safety protocols and the prompt response of the onsite emergency team,” read the statement.

The company further confirmed that there was no interruption or risk to the electricity supply to the national grid and that other turbines are fully operational.

“The affected 0.85MW wind turbine was already offline at the time of the incident. Consequently, there has been no interruption or risk to electricity supply to the national grid, and all other turbines at the facility remain fully operational.

KenGen’s safety team, working in collaboration with relevant safety and regulatory authorities, has commenced an investigation to establish the cause of the incident, assess the extent of damage, and identify appropriate corrective and preventive measures.
