“Bobi Wine: The People’s President” Nominated for Oscar

In a groundbreaking moment for Ugandan cinema, the documentary “Bobi Wine: The People’s President,” was nominated for an Oscar. The film chronicles the opposition campaign led by Ugandan singer-turned-politician Bobi Wine against President Yoweri Museveni’s regime.

The film has been nominated for an Oscar award in the Best Documentary Feature Film category. The announcement places the Ugandan story on the global stage alongside four other documentaries, including the Tunisian film “Four Daughters.”

Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating, “It is such a humbling moment to see the Ugandan story make it to the Academy Awards – the most prestigious and significant awards in the world.” He emphasized that the nomination signifies the ongoing fight for democracy not only in Uganda but around the world.

The documentary captures the fervent opposition campaign waged by Bobi Wine during the 2021 presidential elections, where he contested against President Museveni. Allegations of manipulated votes triggered nationwide protests by opposition supporters, leading to human rights concerns as security forces reportedly killed dozens and arrested thousands of protestors.

Bobi Wine himself has faced multiple arrests and detentions for criticizing President Museveni’s rule. The recent five-day blockade at his home, lifted on Tuesday by security forces, was implemented to prevent the opposition politician from participating in a planned protest.

President Museveni, who has been at the helm of Uganda since 1986, faces accusations of stifling dissent. Critics argue that his rule suppresses opposition voices, a claim he vehemently denies, maintaining that Uganda remains a democratic nation.

The Oscar nomination for “Bobi Wine: The People’s President” not only acknowledges the struggles within Uganda but also sheds light on the broader fight for democracy and human rights worldwide.
